Read: Apocalypse 20:1-4. 11-21:2; Luke 21:29-33 Are the words of Jesus a threat or a promise? Is he warning us of the impending doom, or is he promising us that salvation will come soon and will not delay? Is John’s vision of all things passing and the judgment something to make us tremble or is it something to rejoice in, as the psalmist does, because it speaks to what is the deepest desire of our heart? The word of God is always a two edged sword, it will always be something that reveals the deepest secret of our heart because it is the truth and we cannot avoid the judgment that the truth brings into our life. We can turn from that truth and busy ourselves with other concerns till we are no longer confronted by it, or we can face the truth and act on it. The word of God given to us here is a judgement now that prefigures the one to come and so we have the opportunity to change what needs to be changed before it is too late. The peace in our hearts, the peace of our conscience tells us if it is a time to change or a time to persevere. Whichever it is, it is a time to give thanks because it is a time of God’s mercy given to us to prepare us for what is to come.
