Read Isaiah 1:1 through 4:6 In the midst of a season of drought, plants suffer. Grass is the first type of vegetation to be affected by a lack of rain. Small plants and bushes are the next to fall prey to dry conditions. Trees, with their strong trunks and deep root systems, are usually able to withstand a few months of minimal rain. But when drought conditions are severe, even trees struggle to stay alive. In a last-ditch effort to preserve themselves, trees will shed their leaves before autumn to minimize their need for water. This is the image God used to describe Israel. “You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water” (Isaiah 1:30). God’s chosen nation fancied themselves stronger and better than those around them, able to withstand any trial. But the Israelites had succumbed to sin and found themselves under God’s judgment. Isaiah’s message was a warning to awaken Israel to the seriousness of the situation. Similarly, Christians who are not immersed in the living water of God’s presence eventually find themselves dying spiritually. Prayer Suggestion: Lord, help me see areas in my life where I need more of You.
