Read: Isaiah 1:10-17; Matt 10:34-11:1 Our natural instinct is for those we love and who love us. We want to be close to them and we want them to be close to us. We want to share all things with them, especially our lives. It can be difficult then when we find that we do not share our faith them, it is difficult when those we love have a different moral outlook on life than us. We make our choices on the basis of what we believe God asks of us, but sometimes our love for others can call us in a different direction. That is painful. That is what Christ is talking about in the Gospel today. The natural instinct calls us one way, our faith calls us in a different direction. Discipleship is not always easy, it is not always the option that brings peace into our life because faith enters a world that is torn in two by sin and it feels that division. Yet Christ did come to bring peace to our world and for those who accept his message there is peace, but sometimes we will have to struggle with the pain of distance that sin brings to our world. Only at the final judgment, when all that is sinful and the fruit of sin is swept away, will we know the fullness of Christ’s peace. In this life there will always be division in our world because there will always be sin, but there will also always be the mercy and grace of God to help us.
