Read a story in RETURN TO LOVECRAFT COUNTRY (The Arkham Collector by Peter Cannon) last night that had a bit that was kind of startling and pretty funny I thought. A long time correspondent is finally visiting his reclusive pen-pal. They while away a pleasant weekend examining his rather extensive collection of books and manuscripts. At one point the visitor asks his host to show him the most important, treasured item in his collection. With a bit of drama his host leads him to a window seat which he opens up with a bit a ceremony. Revealed is a, wait for it, a copy of the Necronomicon. Its not some skimpy modern pastiche. It looks like the real thing, with a massive and ancient leather binding and metal hasps holding it shut, the works. The visitor finally manages to pry the thing open and BOOOOOING out pops a lil Cthulhu doll on a spring. Well, it made *me* laugh.
