The elections may not be seen as it used to be in the peak of the armed insurgency (90s). The parties, especially the socio-religious that which once contested in the elections in Kashmir in the past sidelined themselves from politics, at the same time remain on the forefront when it comes to election boycott. But what has been seen that soon after the election bugle, they came out in the manner like “let the people decide” and that was the historical statement they have ever made at that time by maintaining the middle path. What has been seen that there has been a great motivational process launched within the party folds in order to make their people to cast their votes for a particular party, the votes which have been termed as the ‘silent votes’. Such silent votes have been casted during the first phase of the elections. Those parties might not accept it now, but they have been seen playing their ‘silent role’ during the first phase of the elections held a week ago. In the days to come such internal motivations are going to change the discourse of the mainstream politics in Kashmir and the new emerging scenario is going to change the political pitch in the state. Unlike the elections that were held in the past, the separatists this time have not been able to launch a poll boycott campaign in Kashmir. With the indecisiveness to launch a poll boycott campaign they have directly benefitted the forces, which have and which are trying to regain power by hook or crook. Separatists who have remained indifferent to the election drama in Kashmir have now, by their inactive attitude, paved a way or have planted a thought into common Kashmiri that “elections have got nothing to do with the Kashmir issue”. It was made clear to the people some years ago that the leadership is trying to place a thought into the hearts and minds of Kashmiris that the elections have nothing to do with the Kashmir issue, when the two senior leaders of Hurriyat Conference (M) termed the elections as the non-issue; but the people thought that it might be their personal thought in this regard, not that of their faction. The current stance of Hurriyat Conference (M) has validated it now that their thought didn’t represent them but their faction. Chairman of the Hurriyat Conference (M) faction, who has been always criticizing the elections in Kashmir, has intelligently remained silent and kept himself busy in the rehabilitation process. I am not trying to impress that I am against the rehabilitation process, but he has also got some responsibilities regarding the issue of elections. But in contrast he says, “People have voted for bijli, pani aur sadak and not for the India” Does it suits his political stature? He knows how the 70 percent polling figures are misinterpreted in and outside India, if taken as he defines it. The chief of Hurriyat Conference (G) has also been a victim of confusion on directly launching a poll boycott campaign. Now that the first phase of the polling is over, he is now appealing people to stay away from the polls, but he has also clearly stated before the elections that “we have not given the boycott call.” The only faction who has extensively worked on poll boycott campaign is the newly formed faction led by Shabir Ahmad Shah. The same Shah, who was kicked out of Hurriyat Conference (M) on the pretext of issuing statements without consulting the chairman and with the result, his membership was cancelled. But what happened to the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) when two senior leaders of his faction issued statements without consulting him? Weren’t those statements totally against the constitution of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) formed in March 10, 1993? This attitude of Separatist leadership has been a key factor in creating a deadly confusion into the minds of people. Separatists have to come clear on the issue of elections. Tell the people to cast your votes (if you believe that people have voted for bijli, pani aur sadak and not for the India) or boycott the polls (if you believe in something else apart from bijli, pani aur sadak). The time has come for Separatists camp to once again revisit their stand and make it clear. Time demands from you to clear all the doubts, questions and confusion which have born into the minds of people. Kashmiris have been forced to say “Yem Che Saeree Tchoor” (They are all thieves). You cannot blame people for that because your policies and the strategies have made them to say so. They can be wrong but where do you stand? Come out and make your stand clear and see how people will respond. Instead of making them to understand where do we as a leadership stand; you waste no time in blaming the outsider for maligning your image. The reality is that you are yourself responsible for it.
