Read for the Record at Hainerberg ES Read for the Record 2013 Brought to you by your Fantastic HES PTO Thursday, October 3rd is National “Read for the Record Day.” On this day, all across America teachers and students will read a very special book. More than 2.3 million people participated in this special event in 2012 to include the students at HES. For the past two years, the PTO has supported this annual event by purchasing copies of the selected book and other books in the series and hosting reading competitions. Below are the results from last year’s Read for the Record Day: 2012 Top Performing Grade Level – 2nd – 17,813 pages 2012 School Reading Total – 42, 913 pages The selected book for 2013 is Otis, by Loren Long. The PTO has special plans for this year’s event. Please look over the plans/activities below. Feel free to post your questions on HES PTO’s Facebook page. School-wide Activity: Read the Book! Otis - Below is a brief synopsis of the book: Otis is a special tractor. He loves his farmer and he loves to work. And he loves the little calf in the next stall, which he purrs to sleep with his soft motor. In fact, the two become great friends: they play in the fields, leap hay bales, and play ring-around-the-rosy by Mud Pond. But when Otis is replaced with the big yellow tractor, he is cast away behind the barn, unused, unnoticed . . . until the little calf gets stuck in Mud Pond. Then there is only one tractor—and it’s not big or yellow—which can come to the rescue. It is little old Otis who saves his friend. It is Otis who saves the day. Rather than purchasing the book for each teacher, we are happy to share the link below for the free book online. You can create an account or sign in using Facebook. wegivebooks The PTO has purchased four copies of Otis and the other books in the series: Otis and the Tornado and Otis and the Puppy. All six books will be available in the library. The suggested reading age is 4-7. Grade Specific Activities Sure Start through Kindergarten – Each SS-K classroom will be provided with craft kits for each student. These can be completed in the classroom or sent home with students at the teacher’s discretion. 1st Grade – Each student will be given a cow pencil. 2nd-5th Grade Friends Read for the Record Reading Contest Who: 2nd-5th Grade Classrooms When: Monday, September 30-Thursday, October 3rd What: Because this year the focus book is about friendship, students will be encouraged to read to/with a friend. Teachers/students should keep a record of the number of pages read aloud by students with a friend. For the purposes of this contest, the term “friend” can be used loosely. A friend may be a classmate, sibling, parent, or anyone else with whom the student reads. The number of pages read by the student and their “friend” should be recorded. (Please note it is not the time we are recording.) Many teachers already have forms for the purpose of recording reading. For those who don’t already have a form, feel free to use the form on the next page. The classroom reading record for the week should be totaled and turned in no later than COB Friday, October 4th to the PTO box in the front office. Prizes: The top reading classroom in each grade 2nd-5th will receive a tractor piñata filled with school supplies such as pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, bookmarks, glue sticks, etc. Winners will be announced Monday, October 7th. The PTO is excited to see the results of this year’s Read for the Record activities. If possible, please photograph the activities in your classroom so they can be included in the yearbook and other PTO publications. Happy Reading! HES PTO
