Read my statement on the president’s request that Congress - TopicsExpress

Read my statement on the president’s request that Congress appropriate $3.7 billion to address the immigration crisis on our southern border: It is way past time for the federal government to get serious about securing the border. Since I took office more than two years ago, I have been pushing for Border Patrol agents to be on the border – not 10, 20 or more miles away. I have consistently called on the federal government to do what is needed so our citizens in Southern Arizona feel safe in their homes and businesses along the border. It is unacceptable that it has taken a massive humanitarian crisis in which tens of thousands of children have entered our country illegally to get the president and Washington to take notice and act. The president says he needs $3.7 billion to address this crisis. I look forward to hearing how he proposes to allocate the funds, specifically the $433 million he wants for Customs and Border Protection. Much of the attention has been focused on the Rio Grande Valley, where most of these individuals entered the country. But the crisis has seriously impacted Southern Arizona, where thousands of children and others have been transported. As Congress examines the president’s request, I will be guided by these principles: The border must be secured. The people I represent in Southern Arizona must be safe in their homes. Those who entered our country illegally must be returned to their home countries. And Arizona must not bear any of the costs of this failure of Washington.
