The Western Regional Office of the Rent Control Department says it is constrained with logistics to address the high cases of rent disputes in the oil city. Radio Maxx’s Ebenezer Afenyi-Dadzie reports that the disputes which are reported daily, are largely as a result of the discovery of oil in the region, particularly in Takoradi. According to Afenyi-Dadzie, there is a mad rush for commercial and residential buildings resulting in very high rent charges and disputes between tenants and property owners. But the Rent Control Department in the region is unable to handle the numerous rent disputes flooding its office. Afenyi-Dadzie reports that the Department lacks a computer to register, record and track disputes, a vehicle to make rounds to properties where there are disputes and uses an outmoded typewriter. The Regional Principal Rent Officer, Abubakar Swalihu, said the logistical constraint is also preventing the Department from embarking on public education of rent issues.
