Read todays devotion from The Word Speaks a daily devotional based on the sayings of Jesus. Make Hay While the Sun Shines (John 9:4) My farmer father used to say we had to “make hay while the sun shines.” When the weather was good for planting or harvesting, we worked hard and put in long days. With Wisconsin weather, there was always a sense of urgency. Jesus said, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work” (John 9:4). The sands of time for his public ministry were rapidly running through the hourglass. He wanted to proclaim the gospel to so many people in Israel. The Twelve needed to be deepened in their faith and prepared for their ministry work after Jesus was gone. Jesus’ urgency was prompted by his love for people. His love led him to the cross to earn forgiveness for all people. He still has an urgent love for humans (including you). He wants us to have that same sense of urgency. Using our God-given gifts, you and I are to proclaim the message of forgiveness through Christ. Life is short. Is there someone you’ve always wanted to share your faith with but never seemed to get to it? Time is fleeting. Have you grown accustomed to a loved one being separated from Christ? How long before you have a loving and gentle conversation about the Savior-God? How long before the lights go out? What could be more important than sharing Jesus with someone? As long as God gives us the daylight of time, we need to make hay while the sun shines. Souls, loved by Jesus, need to hear the message of forgiveness and life everlasting. Prayer: Jesus, give me a passion to urgently and lovingly proclaim the good news of your love for all people. Amen. From The Word Speaks by Kenneth Kratz © 2011 Northwestern Publishing House.
