Firstly, I assumed it was yet another book in the “peace versus violence” well-worn debate. As such, I found no pressing desire to read it, for I needed no further convincing that Islam is a religion of peace. Secondly, I assumed that the language would be tough to follow, as speeches from conferences usually are. On both accounts, I was wrong. When I finally began reading the book, I quickly discovered that the speeches were in actuality collections of stories about the Prophet Muhammad (s), the companions (ra) and the Sufi guides of Africa, told in a beautiful, clear and concise narrative. In fact, if Mehdi Hasan’s Oxford Union debate of the same title had successfully knocked the opposition down (Lesley Hazleton described it as “Pow!”), then reading Cheikh Cisse’s words would perhaps achieve the same results; only this time, without need of sharp rhetoric or blistering comebacks. The gentle, expositional nature of his words was enough to move my heart to accept the notion willingly, naturally even.
