Read your Bible through in a year: Jeremiah 35, 36, 37: Yesterday we left off with God condemning Israel for their treacherous treatment of slaves, their own Hebrew brethren. Today we pick up with the family of Rechab. God commanded Jeremiah to invite the Rechabites to a certain place and offer them wine to drink. When they came and Jeremiah offered them the wine they refused and explained that their father, Rechab, had commanded them to avoid certain things so they would live prosperously in the land where they were living. God used the Rechabites as an example to the rest of Judah and Israel through prophecy; even though they are not Israelites, the Rechabites were obedient to their fathers’ teachings whereas the Israelites were not. God went further and blessed the Rechabites while condemning Judah and Israel for their disobedience. Next up, God commanded Jeremiah to write down everything He had told him on a scroll. Jeremiah sent for Baruch, son of Neriah, and had him write everything down then take the scroll and read for all the people. Baruch even had the opportunity to read the scroll for the people in the palace, but not the king. The officials took the scroll to the king and read it to him, then the king threw it in the fire so it was burned up, but the king and his officials refused to repent. God hid Jeremiah and Baruch from the king when he tried to find them and kill them. Since the first scroll was burned in the fire, God commanded Jeremiah to make a second scroll. God promised that no man from King Coniah’s descendants would rule again and his family would be punished for their resistance to God and unrepentant hearts. Even when King Zedekiah came to rule the Israelites did not repent. In fact, King Zedekiah asked Jeremiah to pray for the nation, so God sent word through Jeremiah to King Zedekiah saying that surely this calamity would come on Israel because of their stubbornness and they would be taken captive by the Chaldeans. When Jeremiah tried to go to the land of Benjamin, after the Chaldeans moved away from the armies of Egypt, he was caught by one of the captain of the guards, accused of deflecting to the Chaldeans, and sent to the king where he was sentenced to prison unfairly.
