Reading 48: The Gospel According to Mark Suddenly, when they - TopicsExpress

Reading 48: The Gospel According to Mark Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant. And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.” Context & Questions: It’s all too much for the inner group of three disciples. Their heads are reeling. They are struggling to keep their bearings. Jesus is the Messiah, fine. But Jesus will die? Moses and Elijah show up? The Father speaks? Jesus will rise again? What? They can’t take it all in at once. The strange, surprising path of God’s redemption coming into the world is not what they had expected. They know Jesus, and they trust him. They will have to walk this dark path with him, not quite understanding what is happening. And trusting there will be light at the end. Please let there be light at the end. This challenge is for us too. Next up: A boy imprisoned, a father’s faith
