Reading David Charles Manners book, Limitless Sky at the moment about his adventures with Nepalese shamans, theres a powerful bit where he talks (or rather the holy man jahnkri talks) about intention: “Life is limitless but only half lived when undertaken without intention. A wise man does nothing without purpose, without first understanding his reasons and its consequences. He does nothing without dedicating each deed of every day with mindful intent. So what of you? Do you know why you do your deeds, say your words, think your thoughts? If not are you really so different from a performing monkey or a trained dog, merely reacting with learnt behaviour at the promise of reward and praise or in fear of punishment and rejection? Theres something rather daunting about being aware of ones intention for EVERY deed and thought of the day. But nonetheless having a frame of values to inspire and energise ones work and practice is like rocket fuel. The Dalai Lama says intention is half of practice and I am beginning to see why...
