Reading Diane Ravitchs book, Reign of Error, makes me aware of how insidious the influence of the wealthy is upon education in this country. The massive fortune of Bill Gates is being spent in misguided efforts to reform education, even while this admittedly successful computer geek has no apparent depth of knowledge about education. Such folks see the world through their own myopic lenses, and then use their extreme power to influence institutions about which they have no particular expertise. These are the folks who push career education and STEM education at the expense of almost all the remaining fields of inquiry. They are the enemies of the liberal arts, and their own narrow world view prove the danger of not having a genuinely well-rounded education.
