Reading about our political history is instructive in many ways. Apparently all our presidential leaders are exiled or exile themselves when a new leader comes into power. Edward Muteesa died in exile after Obote replaced him. Obote ran to exile in Tanzania when Amin ousted his first regime. Amin died in exile where he settled after losing the presidency. Yusuf Lule was in exile when his Uganda Freedom Fighters joined the Peoples Resistance Army to make the National Resistance Army. Gofrey Binaisa... I have not yet established how he was ousted by Obote II, although I know about the 1980 rigged elections. Did Binaisa flee to exile after the elections? Obote fled to exile in Zambia via Kenya after being ousted by the Okellos. Tito Okello fled to exile in the Sudan when Museveni took over Kampala. From there, Okello received unconditional amnesty and returned to Uganda. History is waiting to record what will happen when the current president loses power. Will he also go to exile? Is it possible for a president to lose the seat in Uganda and remain living a peaceful existence in the country? If subsequent leaders are opposed to those before them, can they allow them to continue living in peace in the country as it happens in other countries? Is ours also a democracy?
