Reading and Discussion for the First Saturday of Advent Todays reading is a prophecy about Jesus rising from the dead. This is one of the most important things that Jesus did. If He hadnt risen from the dead, Satan would have won and we couldnt be friends with God. Can you imagine how much power it took to raise Jesus from the dead? A lot, right? Did you know that the Holy Spirit works that kind of power in you, if youre a friend of God? My life verse is Ephesians 3:20, which says, Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us ... According to His power. He can do things that you cant even imagine! Ask your mom or dad or grandparents about some things God has done for them, which are beyond what they could imagine. And then, if youre a friend of God, start watching for God to do things in your life that are beyond what you can imagine! Remember how we talked about some songs being really old? Well, the song weve been listening to all week, O Come O Come Emmanuel, is one of those really old songs, it was written back in the 1100s ... about 900 years ago! It was written in Latin, a language that isnt spoken any more, but is used in some churches. The version of the song that Ive included today is partly in English and partly in Latin, so you can hear what Latin sounds like. Also think about this: Youre singing a song that people have sung for 900 years! I think thats pretty neat. Since were reading today about Jesus rising from the dead, the other song I included is a song about this by Keith Green. Keith was a man who loved God so very much. When I was young, he died in a plane crash, but his songs (and his life) continue to bless people and be used to worship God. Keith took his friendship with God very seriously and he lived for God in radical ways that very few people would. If you would like to learn about him, Ive also attached a video about him. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. Acts 2:22-36 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know — this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying. “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost. I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.
