Reading politicians benefits is scary - even if they voluntarily retire (eg. are kicked out, except for illegal behaviour) they get 75% of their salary FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE, AND THE REST OF THE LIFE OF THEIR SPOUSE. They also get $1000000s of expenses on top of their salary. Most politicians become millionaires in a very short time, and multimillionaires within a couple of terms. Most politicians get access to (and use) information that the rest of us do not have access to - not one politician has been convicted of insider trading even though a large number have been found out (and reported in newspapers). At the very least, salaries and perks should be brought under the same industrial relations laws (and checks and balances) as everyone else, with politician union fighting the case for an enterprise agreement every 3 years with a peoples tribunal (or Treasury) - like the rest of us.
