Reading the new AQHA Journal, and see an article on ranch safety - TopicsExpress

Reading the new AQHA Journal, and see an article on ranch safety by Larri Jo Starkey. I usually like her articles as they are informative, but boy was this one a disappointment. The people who originally wrote the list she paraphrased should be ashamed. The tips were essentially, have a good fence, vaccinate your horses, if you dont have a vet do shots make sure you know how, dont castrate horses yourself, and dont beat on your colts when starting them. Really??? REALLY? So glad the AQHA executive committee and AQHA ranching council thinks this is important information for ranchers... I sure as hell was insulted, but apparently these guidelines for good animal care might help owners be sure theyre handling their horses in the best way possible (Stan Weaver). Because the rancher, who is the foundation of agriculture/animal husbandry, needs to be reminded to keep a good fence and not beat on his colts? Ugh... And then in the back you see the extremely successful AQHA show exhibitor Cleve Wells on the probation list for violations of animal welfare... Who needs that list again?
