Ready for my rant? A well known public figure was present with his family when the gunman entered the NJ mall last night- he told us all in a long write up he blasted across social media. While my heart goes out to him, his wife, and children for what must have been such a terrifying and extreme event, I am frustrated by the way he coped with the situation. He very clearly writes all the names of high profile officials he called and reached out to during the emergency. How he stayed in the area circling around with his car while his wife and daughter remained trapped inside the mall. The part that sticks with me is how he monopolized the resources he called to help deal with the situation. He called , they called back, he kept them on the phone... How would someone who doesnt have access the the owner of the mall or the mayor of a town feel? If this individual who knows all of these powerful people was helpless...what would a regular person with no connections do? In my head I know I shouldnt say anything, Im just sparking a useless debate (or worse ranting and no one will answer) but my heart knows that education is warranted here. Yes, what are we supposed to do when there is a mass shooting? After you call 911 and find a safe place I would assume you stop using the phone in case other people are trying to reach the individuals you are calling. He mentioned his wife and daughter both didnt answer his calls at first because they were calling 911- then why after hanging up with them did he AGAIN call 911? Driving endlessly around the perimeter is also ridiculous- it forces officials to watch you and what if they thought you were part of the attack? You had three children in the car with you- in my opinion you should have driven to a safe location and waited once you knew your wife and daughter were hiding safely. What if by calling continuously YOU had alerted the gunman to their location? So many what ifs and Im not trying to sound insensitive but from experience when individuals dont know the correct emergency reactions they can make an already scary situation worse. I am happy you and your family made it out safely. I am grateful for the authorities you alerted and who likely received accurate information because of you. I am sorry that in todays world such an emergency response has become so normal that I barely blinked when I saw it on the news- I actually had the fleeting wonder which crazy got set off this time thought. Im not really angry at this man for doing what he felt was best for his family. Im furious that we are living in the USA and if someone decides to shoot up a mall or airport, thats just normal. Outlaw bullets. Ban them- make them worth a million dollars each with a felony ten year sentence if youre caught in possession of one. There is never a reason to shoot a gun with bullets. Humans are curiously fragile- shoot pellets, use tazers, heck even a paint ball gun. Bullets are final and unnecessary and until you can prove to me unequivocally that you have the right to take the life of another human I believe it should be outlawed across the board. Whew. All done.
