Real life terror: The Flat Earth There are still people who believe in the Flat Earth model of our planet (namely a group known as the Flat Earth Society). I cant tell if theyre entirely serious about their beliefs, or its just an elaborate trolling scheme, but Ill take the bait. Even though Man has known the Earth to be spherical since the ancient Greeks, there are still people who cling to the thoughts otherwise. They purport that gravity is just an illusion created by the flat Earth constantly moving upward. Whats its moving up in Im not sure. To quote a William Carpenter, a flat Earth theorist: There are rivers that flow for hundreds of miles towards the level of the sea without falling more than a few feet — notably, the Nile, which, in a thousand miles, falls but a foot. A level expanse of this extent is quite incompatible with the idea of the Earths convexity. It is, therefore, a reasonable proof that Earth is not a globe. Theres plenty more about this stuff, and maybe Ill do another post where we can dig into it, but there are really people who believe this stuff. Whats so scary about that? How can mankind ever reach into the future when its being held in the past?
