Reality Check for Bangladesh Like every Bangladeshi - I consider myself to be a proud Bangladeshi, will go to the end of the world to defend the country, and remain highly optimistic about its future. But great achievements are never possible without proper reality check. We have a tendency to to operate in extremes. Either to term ourselves as a failed state or to establish us as a miracle within the world. None of these are true Cricket can be used as an example to explain this. We are very passionate about our team , about our players, and like every other nation tend to rate our team higher than their potential, and nothing is wrong in that. But we should not over do it. When we defeat one big teams - we begin to think we have already moved into their level. The Zimbabwe 1st test was testimony to that. We barely won a easy match. And one line from CRICINFO captures it nicely. A very tense match between the two team at the bottom of world ranking ( they wanted to say - between the two worst team in the world) and thats exactly where we stand - at the bottom of the table. And nothing wrong in that - we need to get better and move up. But the false belief that we are at par with Pakistan or West Indies will only ensure that we remain at the bottom forever Similarly - as a country - we are not the country at the verge of becoming a middle income . As PPP per capita GDP we stand at 144 according to IMF , within 187 countries, 150 according to world bank out of 185 countries. We are a poor country. We are a country with too many challenges ( poor infrastructure, high level corruption , poor airport, poor political culture and many more) But we are also a nation that has tremendous potential, From that perspective we fall within a very exclusive group in the world Till we are aware of our reality - we will never do the right thing to go to the next level. We may have the best All rounder in our team- but we are one of the weakest among the test playing nations and should keep our expectation and hopes on that parameter.
