Reality When it comes to the concepts of self defense you have to be willing to be honest with yourself. Too many people have misconceptions of what it really is and how to it is truly applied in the real world. I hear so many absurd things said about defending one’s self that I can only attribute them to ignorance. Most people do not want to think about the reality of human violence and feel it will never happen to them, however it does exist .no matter how much you choose to say it does not or that it will never happen to me .the average American has a 1 in 250 chance of being robbed, raped or killed each year. Violence does exist in our world, state and hometown .in order to correct any problem it must first be acknowledged before it can be addressed and corrected. Knowing the difference between a fight and a self defense situation is very important .training to fight in competition is very different from fighting without rules or when trying to escape or defend ones self or loved ones. I would never say that a well trained fighter does not have an advantage over the average person but when the rules do not apply the game changes so the attitude and training must as well. Ignorance and fear can be a great weapon when it is used by an attacker as well as it can be used against them. Someone that attacks you is most likely betting on the fact you are scared and that fear will keep you subdued and that you do not have the knowledge of what to do. On the flip side if you are trained and have prepared the chances are better that you will be able to remain calm and react as needed .the ignorance of attackers and bullies is that they have no real concept of what we do and train for. One of the saddest things to me is that we live in a society that tells us that we have the right to defend ourselves but when we do the laws and media turn the victims into criminals. We see this everyday not only with average people but with our police and military personally I feel no matter the level of self defense situation if you put yourself in that position of being an attacker on any level what follows is your responsibility. And in the case of the police and military we need to stop asking them to protect us and then ridicule them for it. If you have to defend yourself or someone else and are in fear of prosecution for it shame on our society. One of my favorite quotes is “I would rather be tried by 12 then carried by 6 “ think about it. The last thing I want to say is this, if you choose to train then train but do not be fooled that every class will teach you self defense .be informed and think it through .I love the martial arts with all my heart and truly believe in them however if you just take a class at the Y or are taking some sport karate class or even a self defense course look at what and how it is taught and be honest. Some people will try to give you or you give yourself false confidence that you are really learning to defend yourself. This plays back into my thoughts on ignorance and remember ignorance is the lack of knowledge nothing more, educate yourself. As for the attacker that stereotype of martial artist plays in our favor. “In the heart of a warrior there is a peace that most will not see, a conflict that rages daily in his soul and a demon only a fool would unleash”
