Really appreciated these powerful words from Daniel Rockhill. Great idea our birthdays. He gave me permission to share this. Dear Jon, I wanted to send you this note and share some of my recent experiences. My name is Daniel Rockhill. I am a college tennis coach and also a physical therapist. Yesterday 10/28 was my birthday. I have always enjoyed the day for a variety of reasons but mostly for reasons that were “about me”. Yesterday, I decided, would be a day of service to others to help celebrate the day. It was the best birthday I have ever had! I was able to randomly purchase lunch for co-workers at the hospital (until I ran out of money ). I got a bunch of Dunkin Donut gift cards and handed them out on the street. I talked to people and really listened to them. I tried to love, serve and care. Most folks really appreciated these things but some were quite skeptical and even refused. I guess that comments on the state of the world a little and that more love is needed. I have always thought of myself as a bit of a strong and tough man but I have to say that I was brought to tears quite often yesterday…but if felt good. I so much appreciate the things you write and teach about. I was taught well by my parents who were Lutheran teachers and church workers but as years have gone by since their deaths, my service and actions have centered too much around me. I now love my approach to coaching and life. I am so blessed to have been reminded how to put others before me and Jesus first overall. Most of my players are International kids. I love to share “The Seed” and “The Carpenter” with them. I am a better coach now and am building even stronger relationships. Again, the best birthday ever and I think more good to come.
