Really interesting chat with my farrier this weekend. He learnt that highlands and haf lingers in particular land with a flat square foot which is very solid and wide, suitable for hills and making them sure footed. Also their weight is all through their shoulders, setting up concussion when they work on tough surfaces, especially if their feet are not correctly balanced to land flat. The concussion through the heel is what makes them increase the bone formation which predisposes them to laying down extra bone in side bone etc. If they land on an uneven surface or stone etc they are also more liable to feel like a trip or catch themselves. May have got some of this wrong but interesting information. Basically seems to be no heel, no flat landing, no horse?
