Reasons I’m opposed to the proposed Dollar General store at 3300 - TopicsExpress

Reasons I’m opposed to the proposed Dollar General store at 3300 S Jefferson: Glassdoor which ranks companies based on employee satisfaction ranked Dollar General at the 4th worst company in America to work for in 2013. Complaints included Poor wages, poor benefits. Long, non stop mandatory overtime. Unsafe facilities. Higher than standard accident rates. Poorly trained management. Unresponsive corporate upper management. Dollar Generals largest competitor is Wal-Mart. They are a large corporation with no concern for the local community. They could potentially put Save-A-Lot out of business and wed be left with no place within walking distance to buy fresh food. Fresh food is prohibited for 10 years by a deed restriction at the proposed Dollar General site so there is no chance they will offer these items. The Cherokee Business Association seeks to promote businesses diversity and encourage independent locally owned businesses whenever possible. Formula based businesses (chain stores) like Dollar General degrade the identity of our neighborhood and impede our efforts to create a community with a unique character and sense of place. Another dollar store chain does not provide additional benefit to the community and threatens our ability to attract new small businesses to the commercial district. The anything is better than an empty building standard being used in favor of this development is a low bar. If the developer succeeds it has the potential to stay for 30+ years. Better alternatives are available, and if they do not pan out we can always resort back to a dollar store. This development could have very negative effects on the neighborhood. Their rights stop when they infringe on the rights and welfare of existing residents and business owners. Many other strong communities across the country have fought against Dollar General opening and won. We can do better while still serving the needs of the community. Please sign the petition at change.org and attend the Benton Park Neighborhood meeting on Tuesday. The Benton Park Building Review Committee will be making a recommendation to approve the development. Their recommendation will be considered by the membership of the neighborhood and voted on at the meeting. A letter of support or opposition will be drafted by Benton Park based on this vote. change.org/petitions/mary-hart-burton-deny-application-for-conditional-use-of-dollar-general-at-3300-s-jefferson-st-louis?utm_campaign=petition_created&utm_medium=email&utm_source=guides
