‘Reasons Kwankwaso, Lamido won’t dump PDP’ Written by Kola Oyelere - Kano Sunday, 11 August 2013 00:00 font size Print Email раскрутка сайтов Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso and his Jigawa State counterpart, Sule Lamido have strong reasons not to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite the lingering crisis in the party, a source close to the governors told Sunday Tribune. The source who spoke on the condition of anonymity argued that the chief reason the duo would remain was based on the relationship they had built with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a chieftain of the PDP. Speaking with Sunday Tribune, the source stated that “As long as Chief Olusegun Obasanjo remains in the PDP, the governors cannot join the All Progressive Congress (APC). Chief Obasanjo is their political godfather and the relationship that exists between the two governors and the former president dates back to 1999. “When governor Lamido contested the governorship election in 1999 and lost, he was nominated by the late Dr Abubakar Rimi as minister and he was assigned to manage the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by former President olusegun Obasanjo. Even when Lamido was urged to fight Chief Obasanjo by some vested interests, he refused and Chief Obasanjo promised him that he would do all in his power to make him governor, which he eventually did.” “The relationship between governor Kwankwaso and Chief Obasanjo dates back to 2003 when the like of Ghali Na’abba and Rimi felt that they would frustrate the chances of Kwankwaso to be governor simply because they assumed that he was a political son to Chief Obasanjo. Obasanjo felt that he would honour the allegiance and loyalty of Kwankwaso and promised to do everything to make him governor,” the source said. The source further hinted that the recent visit to Chief Obasanjo by some five Northern governors was at the discretion of the duo of Kwankwaso and Lamido. Speaking further, the source said “You will also remember that Chief Obasanjo was in Jigawa State to celebrate with Lamido on his second term in office. With all these, as long as Chief Obasanjo is in the PDP, it will be difficult for the duo to join the APC.”
