Received a call today from a friend in Little Rock asking for my take on Mr. Michael Browns death. He wanted to be able to communicate particularly with those outside of his ethnicity, yet did not want to offend, or seem naive. Although I speak for myself (and not an entire ethnicity) one piece of advice I provided was to continue doing exactly what he was doing - which was to ask honest questions. I think any sustainable step in the right direction, begins with the ability to communicate and listen effectively. Without this fundamental caveat, regardless of any speakers intention, frustrations will continue to replace peace and security. Recap: 1) Ask honest questions. 2) Listen with intentionality. 3) Respond within the scope. -Application applies to us all.
