Received some great news from my friend Alison Hawver McDowell & the Caucus of Working Educators. Thank you for all your hard work on this issue. Hi Everyone, I wanted to reiterate my appreciation for the written and oral testimony on the harm being caused by high-stakes standardized tests that you provided as part of last months public hearings before the Education Committee of Philadelphias City Council. A number of the members of the committee were so moved by what they heard and read, that they swiftly put together the resolution that follows. It passed unanimously at todays City Council session. Because we do not have an elected school board, they cant legally compel the district to follow through, but this action will elevate the issue and expand public awareness, which is half the battle. It means so much that here in Philadelphia, we have access to and can count on a national network of support. In gratitude, Alison McDowell 14097 Resolution calling upon the School District of Philadelphia and the School Reform Commission to analyze the financial and human impact of standardized testing, and to identify strategies to minimize its use, and to request a waiver of the Keystone Exams from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in order to adopt assessments that better serve local needs and priorities.
