Recent media reports have raised some concern that undocumented immigrant children could bring dangerous diseases to our border states. While there is an ongoing political debate in regard to immigration, we must examine the immunization issues based on real data. UNICEF statistics show that the vast majority of Central American countries have immunization rates that are similar to- and in some cases even better than - some U.S. states (due in part to universal health care and 100% coverage of vaccines). As an example, this article states that Guatemalan kids are more likely than Texans to be immunized for most infectious diseases.
