Recent protests in Burkina Faso grabbed the worlds attention, and commentators immediately began to predict that the events could touch off a movement in other African states. Yet this idea doesnt give credit to Burkina Fasos long history of mass public protests in a nation with a very strong and active civil society. The events that led to Compaorés fall were extraordinary in their scale and betrayed remarkable civilian courage, yet the events should also be seen as a continuation of the Burkinabé way.
