Recently, I acquired a cookbook called The Delectable Past by Esther B. Aresty. It is a book of recipes, manners/dining customs and menus dating from the Middle Ages to late 19th century America. And chapters 7 and 10 are, respectfully, from 18th and 19th Century England! The author collects rare cookbooks and shares some of those recipes as well as stories from different periods. Apparently many cookbooks then included home remedies and medicinal recipes. Very intering., For example, in the 19th-Century England chapter, heed this advice: Learn to dance well. If you have not a head, your heels may make your fortune. An artful woman is a saint in the morning and a glow-worm at night. (sounds saucy to me!) Heres a fun recipe from the same chpt. Tipsy Cake ~a slightly stale sponge cake ~sufficient sweet wine or sherry to soak it ~6 tablespoons brandy ~Blanched almonds, sliced ~2 cups soft custard ~Whipped cream Arrange the cake in a handsome shallow bowl or on a compote stand. It may be cut in 2 inch thick layers, or in separate squares for easier serving. In the bowl it should present a solid appearance. If in layers, smooth some of the custard between the layers. Pour the wine and brandy over the cake. When liquor has soaked through, pour on the remaining custard. Decorate with the blanched almonds and top with whipped cream. Sounds like a party in a bowl! Ah, the English ~ such wild & crazy people! Lol
