Recently Ive seen many posts on the severity of the California drought and while it is indeed severe for some areas in the state it appears the real tale of the drought, the most important lesson of it, is not being addressed. There is more banter and discussion over the cause of the drought, then over a viable solution for water use in urban areas, not just California. This current drought is not the most severe in the states history, not in terms of lack of rainfall over a period of time, there have been worse droughts, this is a combination of the lack of rain and the heavier use of water resources. In the 1980s some groups began to warn us that our water use policies in urban areas will eventually begin to tap out the available sources. Los Angeles alone was bringing water in from literally hundreds of miles away to meet its needs. Unless we seriously address how we use water, especially in typically dryer places, even in normal rainfall years, the cities will still run out of water. Even places such as Seattle and Portland could fall into danger of someday over using the available resources. California is a call to not banter about the cause of the drought, but to begin to develop methods for the wise use of a finite resource.
