Recently Trained Officer Aids Victim of Overdose with Narcan Worcester, MA (August 8, 2014) - On Friday August 8, 2014 at approximately 12:50 PM, Worcester Police officers working out of the Community Impact Unit and the Operations Division responded to the area of 12 Plymouth Street for a report of an unresponsive person suffering from an apparent overdose. Upon the officer’s arrival they came upon a 49-year-old male victim who was unresponsive. The male appeared to be rapidly declining. Evidence at the scene suggested that the male is an active IV drug user. The incident was not far from the Aids Project Worcester facility. Arriving emergency responders gained the attention of a person working there. The person went to the scene and informed one of the officers that they had Naloxone Hydrochloride, also known as “Narcan.” Officers at the scene had recently been trained on the use of Narcan. Per departmental policy and procedures, one of the officers administered the Narcan to the victim prior to the arrival of Worcester EMS. Members of the Worcester Fire Department were also present and assisted with providing oxygen to the patient. The male immediately regained consciousness and was eventually able to walk towards the ambulance. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Today, the Worcester Police Department received from the state an emergency supply of 200 vials of Narcan. The Narcan was distributed this afternoon and will continue into the overnight shift. Officers working out of the Operation Division, Community Impact, Vice Squad and other investigative units will each be given a kit. Additional shipments of Narcan are anticipated during the following week.
