Recently a deadly virus has been released. You have it. The virus feeds on fear, ignorance and silence and the infection spreads fast. A video has been released purporting to show the beheading of a Catholic priest by Arab extremists. I have attached a copy of the video but would advise you not to watch it. Currently you can link to it via Catholic websites, CNN, the BBC and other media outlets throughout the world. I did not watch the video. I would not sully my soul or give the perpetrators the attention they crave, and I would advise you to do the same. Instead, I suggest one asks the question why? Why is this conflict different as war by its nature always creates monsters and atrocities? The difference is that the force of modern media ripples out and impacts people with a far greater reach than the biggest bomb, or heinous act in our prior history. Like water eroding the hardest rock, one small act of evil by one small group of evil people erodes our common DNA, our common goals for ourselves and our children and divides and conquers the spirit of individuals and nations. Cell by cell, it effectively builds bias, cultivates fear and reproduces itself in future acts of poor judgment and confrontation. It leads to a “them and us” attitude and a return to disparate tribes and as with all unchecked viruses it wreaks its path of destruction in stealth wiping away years of progress and sacrifices by our ancestors to make our world a better place. That is why one extremist tribe beheads people on video and other extremists from other tribes make sure the video goes viral. You must protect yourself from these manipulations and make sure that your conscious is totally aware of your subconscious via asking better questions before you consume information and afterward by reflecting on what you have allowed into your mind, body and soul because your input will affect your output. The irony of this story is that, in the medias, rush to publish, and print to appear relevant in our technological age the grainy images do not conclusively prove that it was Father Francois Murad that was beheaded. Indeed, human rights watch, unnamed witnesses and the Franciscan Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land all state that he was shot to death. It is imperative in high stress situations such as this that the blade of the war criminal that committed this act touches neither religions nor nations.
