Recently finished Red Orchestra. Interesting book about resistance inside Germany to the Nazis — the book focuses on Berlin. Artists, writers, theater people, communists, socialists; too bad the USSR thought it had to run every communist party in the world, and so told communists in Germany in the early thirties that their real enemies were not the Nazis, but the socialists. In 1939 Stalin signed the non-aggression pact with Hitler, which facilitated Germany’s invasion of Poland. Then a year and a half or so later, Stalin discounted repeated warnings that Hitler was about to invade the Soviet Union — warnings from Berlin, London, Brussels, even Washington. Good insights in this book about the little-known resistance to Hitler in Germany. Relatively recent access to East German archives provided new details, and there’s even a minor Wisconsin angle.
