Recently i came across a few articles and talks on the radio about the elite, rich and famous people of Malaysia. Admittedly, they have a lot to show for. Wealth is power, i suppose. This raises question as to whether material possessions and money is everything in life. The reality remains, though , that most Malaysians are different and live differently. In my mind, the unsung Malaysians will always be the hidden treasures of our beloved country. I am talking about the ordinary Malaysians. People who take pains to make ends meet. People who work long hours just to see a smile on their kids faces. These are the people who find joy in the little things and cannot not fathom the lives of the upper class citizens. Being a young Malaysians myself, i see a lot of regular , day to day events that speak volumes. Just the othet day, i saw a young nurse give away all of her monthly earnings to her family, keeping only the bare minimum for herself, which she held on so tightly, like a bar of gold. She is the product of a caring Malaysian upbringing, a true Malaysian. We are the simple citizens, who enjoy our friends company at a mamak stall or kopitiam, drinking out favourite beverages. We are the people who find happiness in the most peculiar of places, such as spending an hour with a family member in a hospital. We are the kind of people who enjoy a traditional escapade to an island and discover that visiting Malaysias every corner could just as well be an adventure of its own. Our parents or widowed mothers experience painful struggles that are everyday realities and have even stopped having dreams. They would rather look at the beauty of being a simpleton without having high hopes. We are the sons and daughters who strive to take the road not taken. We take the challenge of being in a difficult environment to receive success at a later age. We never give up and try to face adversities heads-on, without fear. We are the mere spectators, who watch our friends try to find greener pastures in foreign lands often with a misplaced belief of a promising future. We are the ones who only seek happiness, nothing else. Are we not a force to be reckoned with? From the Malaysian youth, The Star.
