Recently purchased 2 dress watches from Seiko Corp, the newly launched Brightz SDGM001 and a model from the sister brand Orient Star, the Standard-Date with Carbon Fibre Dial (DV0202B). Based on pricing, I expected the Brightz to kick the OS’s butt, however things are much more even than I expected. Here’s my quick observation: Case: Tie. Both are 41mm, very nicely made, with brushed/polished sections, drilled lugs for ease of bracelet/strap change and exhibition case-back Crown: Tie. Brightz has Onyx cap, which either beautiful or over-the-top, depending on your taste. The OS has a regular signed crown (OS-logo) Bracelet: Tie. The OS bracelet is a straight 21mm, which really help make the watch look bigger and suit my big wrist better. The Brightz has a more ‘normal’ 20mm, and a slight edge in finishing (the OS looks just as good but has some slightly sharp edges). So for folks with smaller wrist, the Brightz wins this round Clasp: Brightz wins. Fully integrated and streamlined design vs. the OS clasp which sticks out slightly when worn. Dial: Tie. The Brightz has a very classic champagne color in sunray pattern, which probably more people will like. The OS dial is also great, however, as the carbon fibre pattern has glossy, almost ‘wet’ finish that makes it look really 3D. Some will question the use of carbon fibre in a dress watch, but I personally don’t mind it. Hour Markers and hands: OS wins. The hour markets are surprisingly more 3D than the Brightz, the hands slightly larger and more legible (both dauphine-shaped). The OS also has lumed hands and small dots just behind the hour markers, making it the only one legible in the dark Crystal: Tie. Both very clear and reflections are kept to a minimum Movement: I call this a tie as I didn’t care enough to compare and test properly, honestly. All I know if both has hacking and handwinding, and sufficiently long power reserve. So majority of rounds are ties, and each won 1 round (Brightz = clasp, OS = hour markers and hands). As the OS is significantly cheaper, this result should make it the clear winner, however as with all things watch-related, it’s ultimately down to your personal taste... Hope you find this an interesting read. Let me know if you own either and please share your thoughts! ☺
