Recently some have posted and shared a picture comparing the hotel near the Kaaba to the the tower of the evil enemy in the Lord of the Rings side by side. If we ignore how this is against the Muslim etiquette and an injustice to compare this building in the Haram to a character of pure evil from a movie (whether you opine that it is extravagance or not) it also possibly falls under mocking of charity and the duty to support Hajj pilgrims... A quick search would show everyone that The Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower, is a government-owned building complex that are part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment Project that strives to modernize the city in catering to its pilgrims. Basically it is an endowment as part of Masjid al-Haram to support the people of Hajj. Allah says: ❝Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.❞ [9:79] The Tafsir of this verse shows that the Jews would watch as people came and gave charity and when someone would donate a little they would mock them saying Allah is not in need of such a small amount and when someone would give a lot they would say he is only showing off. This is exactly what people are doing by mocking this instantly as a charity done to show off. I also wanted to mention when people sometimes show pictures of old Mecca in the same vein to try to make insults out of the developments to the city of Mecca. I agree it looks more calm and nice in those pictures but when one uses it as an insult do they think about how the world population was under a billion in the 1800s and is now over 7 billion... many cities have grown and Meccah was always a trade city with markets etc. The small population with no planes and such means... Secondly thousands of pilgrims used to go yearly.. now millions go, and with that means the need for more hotels, food places, etc. and with the new infrastructure and masjid expansion I think they are trying to make it so they can allow 4 million hajj visas this coming year - which is a lot of people. They also have year round Umrah and with the old Meccah youd have to have people sleeping in the streets for miles around Meccah if the same number were to go as today. Im not a supporter of everything the Saudis do and theres plenty of extravagance but I also dont blindly criticize and hate them for everything they do as its not all bad. When landmarks may be changed to make room for pilgrims remember that it is a duty for them to help the pilgrims and that Umar destroyed the tree where Hudaybiah happened because people started to visit it for sentimental reasons. (Also that half the stories are false and just created to divide us) Even if you dont like them for some reason remember that we are commanded to husnul-dhun (good thinking) and make excuses for Muslim brothers. If you hate them then still be just as Allah says: ❝O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah , witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.❞ [5:8]
