Recently spent two weeks in China and Hong Kong. It was an eye-opening trip, a land of enormous contrasts of ancient and modern, eastern and western. There is much to be admired in modern China, but also a lot of hype – it’s far more complex then what we gather from the media. I visited Beijing -- brimming with historic attractions, Shanghai -- the dynamic business and cultural center of modern China, Xian – the ancient capitol and home to a vast collection of archeological treasure including the Terra Cotta Warriors, Guilin – by Chinese standards an attractive city and the gateway to the region with the most beautiful scenery in China in particular the meandering and very picturesque Li River and finally Hong Kong – the great port city and gateway to modern Asia.
