Recently, the Embassy of Spain in Harare made a donation of a computer to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Arts and Design in a gesture that boosts the school’s Information and Communications Technology programme. Today Visual Artists have broadened their scope to incorporate digital art such as video art and animation into their work and it is now common to find electronic projections and screens in place of the traditional paintings and sculpture. The school is instilling knowledge of New Media to its students and the new computer strengthens the objective to teach these new media courses. Before the donation the school had three top of the range Apple computers to execute all their New Media and Design studies at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s city center premises, however with the Embassy of Spain’s generous donation of a state of the art laptop the school’s staff will be able to conduct lessons at the Mbare Studios as there are no secure computing facilities there.
