Rector, MAN Oron Bags Global Peace Ambassador Award In appreciation of Mr. Joshua Okpos effort in initiating the prevailing peace in the once warring communities of Idua Ukpatta and Udung Okung in Oron Local Government Area, coupled with his sustained commitment in repositioning the Premier Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron in line with global best standards, an international organization known as International Organization of Advocates for Global Peace and Development, on Tuesday conferred Global Peace Ambassador Award on the Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Chief Joshua Okpo. Presenting the award plague to the Rector at the Conference Room of the Academy on Tuesday, Ambassador Prof. Long John represented by Dr. OtuAbasi described Mr. Joshua Okpo as an erudite and seasoned administrator who has placed Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron, on the global map of reckoning. Ambassador Long John noted that the Rector was carefully selected for the award after an independent opinion poll conducted by the representatives of the body in Nigeria. The International President of the Advocates for Global Peace and Development, observed that the Joshua Okpos administration was not lagging behind in its corporate social responsibility to the host communities demonstrably in the initiation of relative peace; provision of electricity and pipe-borne water for the people of the area and building of a bridge of chivalry with members of the host community. Prof. Long John who described Ambassador Joshua Okpo as a transparent, focused, astute administrator who is driven by the burning desire for the conversion of the academy into a degree-awarding institution, said the honour on the Rector was a reward for hardwork, quality and sincere service to his fatherland. Prof. Long John expressed satisfaction over the state of Infrastructural development in the academy and saluted the Rectors courage, integrity and fertile sense of administration. Ambassador Long John hinted that the resolution adopted at the 37th session of UNESCOs General Conference empowered Director General to implement a programme of activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the project in different regions of the world, explaining that the conferment of Global Peace Ambassador award on the Rector of the Academy was part of the activities of the organization to appreciate those who contribute to the world peace. He disclosed that August every year was set aside by United Nation and UNESCO as International Day for the remembrance of the slave trade and its abolition. He added that through an holistic and reconciliatory approach and its multi-sectional and inter-disciplinary activities, the project has actively contributed to the debate on the management of common heritage in modern societies, noting that slavery and slave trade have been recognized as a crime against humanity and international community. The leadership of the international organization of Advocates for Global Peace and Development urged the Rector to use the award conferred on him to promote peace in the Academy community. Responding, the Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Amb. Joshua Okpo described the honour as historic and memorable, expressing gratitude to the Leadership of International Organization of Advocates for Global Peace and Development for acknowledging his contributions to the promotion of peace in the country. Amb. Joshua Okpo who was visibly elated and overwhelmed by the encomiums poured on him by the delegates of the international organization, disclosed that he never lobbied for the award, rather, it was his unwavering and patriotic commitment to the service of his fatherland that has earned him the honour. Ambassador Okpo recalled that he came on board to fulfill three core mandates of calming frayed nerves in the academy and its neighbouring communities; clean up the academy and put it on the path of growth, expressing joy that so far, he has been able to calm frayed nerves, sanitized the academy and he is currently placing it on the part of growth as evident in the quality infrastructure spread across the length and breadth of the academy, provision of state-of-the-art facilities, training and retraining of staff and cadets of the academy as well as his unflinching determination to secure a degree awarding status for the institution. He however dedicated the award to his late mother who groomed and nurtured him to become an apostle of Peace and those who made enormous sacrifices during his crusade of registering relative peace in academy community.
