Recycling top tips - In the run up to Christmas: • When doing your Christmas shop, make a shopping list and stick to it. 20% of all Christmas food is wasted. • Portion correctly for your Christmas food – lovefoodhatewaste – 20% of all Christmas food is wasted, often because we make too much due to lack of correct portioning. • If you have space, keep your recycling bin next to the main bin not only during the festive season, but all year round, so you can take out the rubbish and recycle at the same time • Get the kids involved in the household recycling routine while they’re on Christmas holidays. It’s a great educational activity • Why not buy a real Christmas tree in a pot this year instead of buying one with its roots cut off that has to be disposed when it dies? Your tree can then be planted back into the ground. Once planted, the average rented tree will then absorb 1 tonne of carbon, that’s around 10% of your annual carbon footprint. • When you go to do your big Christmas shop, take any recycling which you can’t recycle at home with you to your local recycling banks. • Look out for gifts with packaging that can be reused. Gift bags can be reused again and again. And presents which come in tins or plastics containers can be used over and over again for storage at home. • Look out for presents made from recycled material this Christmas? A growing range of clothes, furniture and even electronic goods contain recycled material and will make perfect ‘green’ gifts this Christmas. • A good way to reduce wrapping waste is to use ‘furoshiki’ a Japanese-style of wrapping presents with material which can then be reused.
