Red Cross Solomon Islands floods update Thursday 10 April 2014 Key statistics • 21 people dead, 2 are missing (revised down by Royal Solomon Islands Police Force) • There are approximately 9400 people in 21 welfare centres (NDMO figures) • 52,000 people have been affected – 12,000 in Honiara and 40,000 in Guadalcanal Donations For those wanting to donate funds to the relief effort, SIRC has opened a Solomon Islands bank account. This can used by overseas donors as well by using this Swift Code: NBSI SBSB SIRCS Relief Fund Bank of South Pacific Acc: 01 9000 1203 05 Clothing - SIRC is accepting donations of CLEAN clothing only to its Chinatown offices 8am-8pm. Food – SIRCS will NOT accept food donations. All food donations should be delivered to HCC or NDMO. Latest Red Cross actions Water SIRCS has two NOMAD water purification units set up at Tuvaruhu. As of Wednesday night (9 April) we had purified 26,000 litres of water. This has been delivered to Panatina Pavilion, Holy Cross, Mbokonavera, Soap Factory and King George VI School evacuation centres. Water distribution will continue today to all evacuation centres in Honiara using two 3-tonne trucks. A third NOMAD water purifier from Red Cross Australia will be uplifted from a DFAT warehouse today. SIRCS has completed registrations of displaced people in Honiara and is sharing this information with Government and other agencies. Much of Guadalcanal remains inaccessible. 15 SIRCS staff and volunteers are distributing water, water containers and doing damage assessments in Guadalcanal plains. A trained SIRCS emergency response team is with them. Target areas are Ngalibiu to Balasuna (wards 18 to 21). In total 60 SIRCS volunteers and staff are carrying out the work in Honiara and Guadalcanal, supported by delegates from French, Australian, and New Zealand Red Cross national societies and IFRC. We are moving! Please Note: The SIRCS Emergency Operations Centre will return to our Chinatown offices today (10 April). We will no longer operate from Honiara Hotel.
