Red Stick -- sculpture by Frank Hayden located on the campus of Southern University The Red Stick sculpture reaches 36 feet into the sky. It is comprised of three 28 tall panels representing the past, present and future, and a central red pole. A triangular motif gives the sculpture an tent-like shape - an allusion to the Houmas Indians who used the blood-stained tree that gave Baton Rouge its name. The panels are inscribed with words written by Truman Hawes and read as follows: Istrouma, Le Baton Rouge, the Red Stick... A marker once of boundary and division, A symbol now of meeting and common purpose: This emblem of our city is dedicated to Liberty, opportunity, and brotherhood. The aluminum for the sculpture was donated by Kaiser Aluminum Co.; the anodized aluminum pole was donated by Gulf States Utilities (now Entergy); Exxon Corp donated the chemical that gives the pole its red color.
