Red flag up for filing taxes before April 15 By April Montes STA. MARIA, Pangasinan, March 12 (PIA) – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has pressed the countdown bell to the deadline of paying taxes on or before April 15. Lawyer Nasrollah Conding, revenue district officer of BIR-Revenue District Office based in Urdaneta City, said the red flag has been raised for income earners to register, file and pay their taxes before the April 15 deadline. The BIR reminder was held in time for its tax campaign kick-off last week. Conding said the yearly tax campaign kick-off is like a bell that sounds off the start of the filing season. He said this year’s tax campaign theme: “I Love the Philippines, I Pay My Taxes Right. It’s as Easy as Register, File and Pay” captures in a nutshell the basic steps that a taxpayer should follow to comply with the obligation of paying the proper taxes. “Registration is important. Every Filipino must have a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) which can be obtained for free,” he said. He said the BIR conducts weekly tax collection awareness drive to educate taxpayers on the tax category and classification. He added the drive seeks to so inform people what taxes are and what are they for because only a few knows its purpose. “Awareness is needed. If we are aware that our taxes are the lifeblood of the nation, it will urge us to file our income tax returns. And if we are not exempted, then we have to pay our taxes right,” he added. Daisy Pira, officer-in-charge chief of assessment section, said that BIR Commissioner Kim Henares seeks to inform taxpayers that voluntary compliance of one’s duty to pay taxes is simple following the concept of register, file and pay-system. She said the BIR developed and maintained the eFPS or Electronic Filing and Payment System for electronically filing tax returns and paying taxes due through the internet. “Processes of filing and paying are made convenient by BIR through these web-based services,” Pira said. Meanwhile, Conding announced that their district office has collected P76 million in January 2014, exceeding the district’s collection goal P74 million, which brought them to the top spot in the Collection Performer category for January in Region I.
