Redfern in Sydney is known as an important part of the country for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the continent. The Block, bounded by Eveleigh, Caroline, Louis and Vine Streets in particular, has long been associated with Aboriginal peoples. The Aboriginal Housing Company was set up in 1973 as the first urban Aboriginal community housing provider. In 2004 much of the AHC housing was demolished with plans for re-development, as part of the AHCs Pemulwuy Project. The Redfern Tent Embassy was set up earlier this year to protest aspects of that development. And an international real estate broker has cited the loss of First Nations peoples to the area, are a positive. NITV News Tara Callinan will have more tonight on Channel 34.
