Rediscover Sumner Academy - Volunteer of the Year! This week the spotlight falls on Kyle Reynolds who was honored recently as the 2014 Volunteer of the Year. The award is given to an individual who personifies the volunteer spirit at Sumner Academy. “I was caught off guard by the award,” said Kyle, whose two children attend Sumner Academy, one as a Kindergartener and the other as a third grader. “I don’t volunteer for the recognition. I prefer to be behind the scenes where I can make a difference to the kids and the teachers.” Sumner Academy faculty and staff see Kyle as a volunteer who will go the extra mile. From helping teachers assemble bulletin boards, filing, cutting out paper for student projects, to putting up hooks for student backpacks, there’s no assignment Kyle won’t tackle. As a stay-at-home dad, Kyle is on the crest of a growing wave of fathers who assume the at-home parent role. Like many stay-at-home dads, Kyle left a lucrative career in order to care for his children. Kyle was born and raised in Gallatin but finished high school in Charlotte, North Carolina after his father was transferred there just before Kyle’s junior year. After earning a communications degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, he began his career in the radio business, selling ad space and hosting on-air talk shows focusing on sports and golf. Later, he transitioned into the golf business, serving as general manager of a private indoor/outdoor golf teaching facility. “It was like a health club dedicated to golf,” says Kyle. “I met my wife there while she was in law school.” Kyle and his wife eventually tied the knot in a golf-themed wedding in St. Andrews, Scotland followed by post-ceremony photos on the Old Course at St. Andrews and St. Andrews University. After relocating to Nashville for a job his wife had landed, Kyle entered the mortgage business and was eventually named vice president of operations, overseeing offices in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. “We had a nanny for a while but when she moved away, we had a hard time replacing her,” says Kyle. “When our daughter was two, I decided to stay home with the kids. It just made sense.” Today, seven years later, Kyle is confident that he made the right decision. Quality time with his children is just one of the perks. “I love spending time with my kids and I also love knowing all my children’s classmates and their teachers,” he says. “. “It was a little embarrassing to win the Volunteer of the Year award but I feel a lot of gratitude. I am especially thankful for my wife Saras career which allows me the opportunity to stay home with the kids.”
