Redland City Council will celebrate International Day of the World’s Indigenous People with a special free event next Friday (9 August) at the Cleveland Library. Council spokesman for Arts, Culture and Innovation Paul Bishop said the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous People was a great opportunity to acknowledge Council’s commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people living in the Redlands. “In particular, it is a chance to showcase the achievements and contributions that our local Aboriginal people make and to improve our understanding of their cultural ties to the Quandamooka area, known today as Redlands, and to their values and cultural practices,” Cr Bishop said. Traditional Aboriginal culture will be celebrated through song and dance by internationally acclaimed Aboriginal dance troupe, Nunukal Yuggera. The event also will include Yarnin’ time with local Quandamooka woman Sandra Delaney. “Sandra has dedicated her life to supporting her community and is passionate about preserving Aboriginal knowledge and the cultural heritage of Quandamooka,” Cr Bishop said. “This helps to keep local Aboriginal culture alive by sharing stories, celebrating and promoting their history. “I look forward to being there and celebrating with them on the day.’’ Event details: Where: Cleveland Library When: Friday 9 August Time: 12.30 -2.30pm - Nunukal Yuggera Aboriginal Dancers 12.30 – 1pm Showcasing traditional Aboriginal culture through song and dance, members of the internationally acclaimed Aboriginal dance troupe Nunukal Yuggera are descendents of the Nunukul, Yuggera, Yugimbir and Nugi tribes. - Yarnin’ time with Sandra Delaney 1 -1.30pm Sandra Delaney is a local woman from Quandamooka country who has dedicated her life to supporting her community.
