Reeva Steenkamp with Oscar Pistorius. WhatsApp messages between Reeva Steenkamp and Oscar Pistorius that were read out in court today offer a disturbing insight into the kind of relationship the couple shared In arguing their case the state aims to show that Steenkamp and Pistorius were not a loving couple as the public had thought they were. During his testimony at the North Gauteng High Court on Monday afternoon, cellphone expert Captain Francois Moller testified about the mobile phones that were removed from the scene. He said investigating officer Hilton Botha gave him four cellphones (two blackberries and two iPhones), two iPads and a Macbook computer for analysis. Moller’s testimony included reciting messages between the couple. It is clear from the messages that Steenkamp was afraid of Pistorius and the relationship was rocky. “I’m scared of you sometimes and how snap at me and how you would act towards me . . . you throw tantrums in front of people . . . I was not flirting with anyone, I feel sick that you suggested that and made a scene at the table and made us leave early.” While the private messages were read in court Pistorius kept his head down and wept. While Moller stated that 90% of the messages were “normal and loving”, the remaining 10% reveal that Pistorius was controlling, insecure and did not like it when Steenkamp communicated with her ex- boyfriends. Another message read: “I would like to think that I make you proud when I attend these kinds of functions with u. I present myself well and can converse with others whilst you are off busy chatting to fans/fans. “I also knew people there tonight and whilst you were having one or two pics taken I was saying goodbye to people in my industry. Fix wanted a photo with me, I was just being cordial by saying goodbye whilst you were busy. “I completely understood your desperation to leave and thought I would be helping you by getting to the exit before you because I can’t rush in the heels I was wearing. I thought it would make a difference in us getting out without being harassed anymore. “I didn’t think you would criticise me for doing that, especially so loudly so that others could hear. I might joke around and be all- tomboyish at times, but I regard myself as a lady and I didn’t feel like one tonight after the way you treated me when we left.” Pistorius stands accused of killing Steenkamp on 14 February last year.
