Reeves is our Mermaid Cat and he is very special and looking for a VERY special home...maybe that home is out there for Maddies Pet Adoption Days??? Reeves came to us with paralyzed back legs that BOTH had to be amputated due to the blood supply being cut off by a blood clot called a saddle thrombus. We named this brave boy after Christopher Reeves because he was SUCH a superman for surviving what is deadly for so many other cats. He was SO friendly that the shelter staff asked us to save him and we couldnt say no :) He has been SUCH a gift to us we are so glad we took him. These blood clots are usually VERY EXCRUCIATINGLY painful and the cat needs to be euthanized. Reeves was the exception. He did not appear to be in any pain. Although these blood clots are usually due to a heart problem (in Reevess case, its Hypertrophic CardiMyopathy or HCM, which is common in his breed/breed mix Maine Coon), which makes surgery impossible or extraordinarily risky Reeves made it through. Post-surgery he had some complications and had to spend a few days at the specialty center and the vets there were AMAZED that he had made it through surgery!!!! He saw the internist for his medical management combining both Western and Eastern medicine and he was given a prognosis of 4-6 months to live. He has outlived his expectation!! When he went back for a checkup, his cardiac ultrasound showed that his condition had not worsened!!! Reevess condition is terminal (but hey, LIFE is terminal, right?) and he is considered a hospice case. But, dont tell him that!! He pulls himself around on his front legs in a handstand (he HATED the wheelchair). He does a great job using the litterbox. He is happy and loving and joyful and sweet. The only thing he cant do is scratch his ears and he appreciates help with this several times a day. He does take medication twice a day and he eats a special food (to help keep his kidneys healthy because his heart medication can cause issues there). He IS in heart failure but his quality of life and attitude are that of a fighter so we dont know how much time he has left. His veterinary needs are sponsored for LIFE due to a generous grant from Maddies Fund. We can work out details with any adopter. He does get a little stressed out in the car (and stress is not good for a bad heart) so QUALITY of life is our focus. If you can help Reeves find his forever, his personality and love will pay you back a thousand-fold. He will NOT be attending our adoption events for Maddies this weekend because it would be too stressful for him but interested parties can meet him at our vets office in Pittsburg.
